Tradition
Father's Day was Sunday as well as the official start of Summer. It's a coincidence these two days occurred on the same date because of what I remember about every summer during my childhood. Not to play stereotypes, but like many Asian parents, education is extremely important. I've always felt that I was gifted at birth with intelligence when in reality it was grown continuously and consistently. I remember one day my Dad, sister and myself went to Lowe's and came home with the supplies. That same day, he went to work and finished making an enormous chalkboard. Truthfully, the chalkboard covered the entire wall. Every morning, I would wake up to find a chalkboard full of Math problems that I'd have to finish before playing with my friends. I use to love waking up and seeing how quickly I could finish the board. He'd try to stump me with a problem every once in a while too.
I gave Amirah her first set of Math problems this morning. She wasn't the biggest fan of waking up to find a board full of Math, but she worked her way through them. Guess what happened before she went to bed at night. "Dad, don't forget to give me more Math problems for when I wake up in the morning," she said.
They say every person has a different set of Love languages that speak to them and that they use to speak/show love to others. My Dad isn't much of a wordsmith, but he speaks his Love through his actions. That's a family tradition worth continuing.
